Galicaster green screen instead of video

Reinis LU
This post was updated on .
Hallo comunity,

I am setting up our University’s first kit. In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit we have installed Blackmagic Declink SDI and  Intensity PRO Cards. SDI will be used with Sony EVI-H100S camera and Intesity Pro HDMI with Video scaler (for diferent type of laptop connections).

Right now I am trying to set up Declink SDI and I can see video in Blackmagic Media Express, so I assume that all drivers are correct. Also I have tried different Video formats and they all work with Media Express. When I turn on Galicaster I see simply green screen. From what I have found in internet it is something with drivers. Here some specs:

conf.ini

[basic]
admin = True
profile = Default
visible_tracks = True
stopdialog = True
shutdown = True
quit = True
resolution = auto

[allows]
manual = True
start = True
stop = True
pause = True
overlap = True

[logger]
path = /tmp/galicaster.log
level = DEBUG
use_syslog = False
rotate = False

[plugins]

screensaver = False

[track1]
name = Blackmagic
device = blackmagic
flavor = presenter
location = /dev/blackmagic/card1
input = sdi
input-mode = 1080p25           //Sony camera is set also to 1080p25
audio-input = none
subdevice = 1
vumeter = False
player = True
amplification = 1.0

Hi Reinis,

same setup here. Do you have your profile in the conf.ini file or in a
seperate file in the profiles folder?
Also do you use the latest Blackmagic Drivers?

Re: Galicaster green screen instad of video

Reinis LU
Hi, Stefanos!

Thank You for reply.
I use conf.ini as my one and only configuration file. Does it makes sense to make another one?
Yes, I use latest drivers and check them with

> $ BlackmagicFirmwareUpdater status
> blackmagic0 [Intensity Pro] 0x1e OK
> blackmagic1 [DeckLink SDI] 0x1d OK

Which Ubuntu system You use: server or desktop? Right now I feel like I have tried everything I could imagine and will try to switch from desktop to Server, maybe it helps... Also fresh installation.

Maybe some advices on installation process? Plan to do it on Monday

Thanks everyone,
Reinis

Re: Galicaster green screen instad of video

stefanosgeo
Hi Reinis,

 From my experience you don't have to install an ubuntu's server
edition. The one you have is sufficient. We have three ubuntu 12.04
machines with Balckmagic Intensity pro and Decklink cards installed. I
am 99% present that this is not a drivers problem, you said that the
media express is working fine. At least with the Decklink card (we have
some colour problems with the intesity card)

It's suggested to leave the /etc/galicaster/conf.ini without any track
information (so that can take the default values).

Go in the /etc/galicaster/profiles/ folder and make as profiles as you
like. Then you can switch from one profile to another.

For example we have a profile with only the camera and the sound called
sonyOnly.ini with the following info

[data]
name = sonyOnly

[track1]
name = SonyHD
device = blackmagic
flavor = presenter
location = /dev/blackmagic/card1
file = CAMERA.mp4
input = sdi
input-mode = 1080p25
audio-input = none
subdevice = 1
vumeter = False
player = True
amplification = 1.0
active = True

[track2]
name = Microphone
device = pulse
location = default
file = sound.mp3
flavor = presenter
vumeter = True
player = True
amplification = 1.0
active = True

And you can make another profile sonySound.ini with
Camera+Computer+Sound like this

[data]
name = sonySound

[track1]
name = SonyHD
device = blackmagic
flavor = presenter
location = /dev/blackmagic/card1
file = CAMERA.mp4
input = sdi
input-mode = 1080p25
videoencoder = x264enc bitrate=2048 speed-preset=0 profile=3 quantizer=21
audio-input = none
subdevice = 1
vumeter = False
player = False
active = True

[track2]
name = Vga
device = blackmagic
location = /dev/blackmagic/card0
file = VGA.mp4
flavor = presentation
input = hdmi
input-mode = 720p50
audio-input = none
subdevice = 0
vumeter = False
player = False
active = True

[track3]
name = Microphone
device = pulse
location=default
file = sound.mp3
flavor = presenter
vumeter = True
player = True
amplification = 1.0
active = True

First try the cam only to check what card has the problem. And if it
work then try the other.
You can try our profiles, maybe they do the job, but maybe you have to
adjust them to your own values.

I will be waiting for your results :).

Regards

Re: Galicaster green screen instad of video

Reinis LU
Hi, Stefanos!

Thank You for great help. I use Your first file and I still get green screen :(

But here is some progress update.
I installed fresh installation with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and basically used this installation steps: instalation steps

when I run:
$ gst-launch-0.10 videotestsrc num-buffers=25 ! video/x-raw-yuv,width=800,height=600,framerate=24/1 ! ffmpegcolorspace ! xvimagesink
I also get green screen.
When I install Media Express I can see the video everything is perfect.
In Galicaster I have tried Your and mine config files, trying switching between resolutions and still green screen. In MediaExpress everything works and shows on all resolutions and frame rates.

Today I installed latest Ubuntu 13.10
fallowed all the steps in "instalation steps" I showed before and in Galicaster I can see the first frame, then after some seconds some more frame, but Galicaster hangs on that point and only Brutal System Restart helps. Will play tomorrow more with that 13.10 will see where it will take me.

System is latest i7, with 8GB RAM, SSD so I assume PC performance shouldn't be the case.
Camera I use is Sony EVI-H100S.

PS All that is on same PC, i splited HDD in three parts and use it that way.

Some new ideas or something to try?!

Thank You!

Hi Reinis.,

sorry for the late reply,

your system is very good (we use an i5 with 4gigs of ram and it's working pretty smooth). I also saw a presentation lately with Galicaster and Ubuntu 13.10 , so from software side, you don't have problems. To be honest I didn't knew the git page. I used this one http://wiki.teltek.es/display/Galicaster/1.2.0+Software+installation which is for v. 1.2 but it works fine (at least for me).

For gst-launch I think you need to change the framerate from 24/1 to 25/1 for your camera (but I am not very sure).

Still, it's very strange that it not working.

Of course the guys from Teltek can help you more than me.

Sincerely
Stefanos

Re: Galicaster green screen instad of video

Rubén Pérez
Hello,

First of all, sorry for our long silence. Sometimes 24h a day are not enough!

I see Stefanos have given very good indications to help you track the problem. Let's put them together and add some of my own:
  1. Don't put your track configuration in config.ini. That's what the profiles are for. Remove all the [track]s and put them in their own separate file under the profiles folder.
  2. Go step by step. Try to configure a single, simple device first (for instance, the audio, or a camera that it's known to work). Then try adding other devices to the profile and see how it goes.
  3. You may also try to run a Gstreamer pipeline from the command line, but don't impose restrictions on the pipeline to see if there's a hardware problem. Namely, use gst-launch0.10 v4l2src device=<device_name> ! xvimagesink . When setting up the capabilities for the device, you may check the ouptut of the command v4l2-ctl --list-formats-ext -d <device_name> .
  4. See the output of the logs (dmesg, Galicaster's log in /tmp/galicaster.log, /var/log/syslog...). There may be some useful information.
Hope it helps!

Rubén Pérez Vázquez

Re: Galicaster green screen instad of video

Reinis LU
Thank You, Rubén and Stefanos.

My setup is finally working!

I needed to change computers. I am not sure if problem was in latest i7 CPU or in motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3. As mentioned before everything works perfectly on Media Express, but Galicaster simply lags all the time.

Right now on older i7 or i5 everything works as it should, already has connected both my cameras and receiving both video signals and making recordings.

If needed for debugging purposes I can set up that system again to give you needed details or run some compatibility tests.
Right now it is time to set up Matterhorn.

One more time thank You all for great help!

Reinis Nartiss

Dear Reinis,

we are in the progress of also bying GA-Z87M-HD3 with i7-4770K for use
with Blackmagic Mini Recorder.

Blackmagic recommends this board for their products.

Now you say you could not make it work with Galicaster, which is
pretty bad news for us.

Which board did you choose instead?

Regards, Andreas

Re: Galicaster green screen instad of video

Reinis LU
Dear Andreas,

I tested on two other computers where cards worked fine in 12.04LTS and latest 13 ubuntu:

1) mine old i7-950 3.06GHz with Asus P6X58D-E, 8GB RAM and Kingstons SSD 256GB.
2) New i5-3550 3,3Ghz with Intel DH77EB board same 8GB and same Kingston SSD.

I think the issue is in Hasselhof CPU or somewhere in that bord "latest technologies". Yes I also bought it because of Blackmagic recomendations.

Regards,
Reinis

Re: Galicaster green screen instad of video

Hi all,

Well well this is interesting... We orderd 5 new Fujitsu Espirmo's
http://www.fujitsu.com/fts/products/computing/pc/desktops/advanced/esprimo-p720-e90/index.html

The cards (one Decklink and one Intesity) working in only one slot. The strange thing is that the same cards are working in all slots in our old machines (P710)

I described the problem here
http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=16030

Maybe a 4th Gen Processor problem, but seems like a BM problem or Motherboard problem. Not Galicaster problem for sure.

PS I test them with Win7 ->same problem

Regards

Stefanos

Re: Galicaster green screen instad of video

Reinis LU
This post was updated on .
On my case they worked on BM Media Express with no complains and all resolutions and frame rates, at least SDI card did work. But in Galicaster on ubuntu 12.04LTS I got green screen, but in ubuntu 13 I got lagging not only video but the whole software was working in big lags. Same happened when only SDI card was installed. The error I got from running Galicaster from Terminal stated that my machine is too slow or something like that, so I taught that maybe Galicaster don't know how to use this technology...

Same cards on both other machines worked fine in 12.04LTS and also in 13 version of ubuntu.
